Why You Should Get Married in Alabama Hills

Incredible Landscapes
Alabama Hills’ landscape is so unique with rock formations similar to Joshua Tree, and views of Mount Whitney that create an unforgettable backdrop.

Fewer Rules, More Flexibility
Unlike national parks and state parks, Alabama Hills doesn’t have strict permit limits or ceremony site rules. You have the space to explore and personalize your day—just follow Leave No Trace principles.

Perfect for Couples who love the outdoors
Whether you’re into hiking, climbing, or camping, this spot offers adventure and solitude. It’s a peaceful, awe-inspiring place to exchange vows.

Where to Elope in Alabama Hills

One of the best things about planning an Alabama Hills elopement is the flexibility—you can get married just about anywhere within the BLM land. There are no designated ceremony sites in Alabama Hills, which means you’re free to find a location that feels personal, private, and completely your own.

Some couples are drawn to the well-known views along Movie Flat Road, while others prefer to explore and discover a hidden gem. That’s the beauty of Alabama Hills—you don’t have to follow strict regulations, as long as you’re following Leave No Trace and respecting the land.

Pro Tip: For the most privacy and best light, avoid weekends and holidays, and plan to scout locations ahead of time.

First Steps to Planning Your Alabama Hills Elopement

  1. Decide who’s coming
Will it be just the two of you, or are you inviting a few favorite people to join?
  2. Pick a date + inquire about your permit
Reach out to the BLM Office early to request your Special Recreation Permit. Permits are required for all weddings in Alabama Hills.
  3. Start looking for your vendors
Photographers (like me!) often help with more than just photos—we assist with helping you build a custom timeline, flocal vendor recs, and the little things you might not think of. Locking in your team early means less stress later and way more fun.
  4. Choose your experience style
Do you want to fully immerse yourself in nature with a camping elopement? Or would you rather have the comfort of a nearby Airbnb? Both options are amazing—it all comes down to your vibe.

Alabama Hills Permit for Weddings

If you’re planning an Alabama Hills elopement, you’ll need a Special Recreation Permit through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

As soon as you’ve picked a date, reach out to the BLM office to start the application process—it can take time, so the sooner, the better.

While Alabama Hills is more relaxed than most national parks, permits are still required for weddings, elopements on BLM Land.

Camping Permit in Alabama Hills

As of October 2024, a free camping permit is now required for all campers in Alabama Hills. You can easily sign and obtain it online.

Keep in mind:

  • Campsites are first come, first serve—this permit does not reserve a site.
  • Camping is only allowed in designated areas to protect the landscape.

Where to Stay in Lone Pine, California

If you’re not planning to camp, the town of Lone Pine is the perfect place to stay for your Alabama Hills elopement. It’s just minutes from the entrance and offers a mix of cozy Airbnbs and rustic cabins with mountain views and small-town charm.

Here are a few standout Airbnb options:

Whether you’re planning a low-key stay or making a full weekend of your elopement, Lone Pine has the comfort and convenience you’ll want—without taking you far from the landscape you came to explore.

Weather in Alabama Hills

Alabama Hills sits at an elevation of 5,300 feet, which means it experiences a high desert climate—warm, dry days and cool nights all year round. The weather can shift quickly here, so layers are a must no matter what time of year you elope!

Best Time to Elope in Alabama Hills

Spring to Early Summer (March–June):
Cool mornings and mild daytime temps (60s–90s), clear skies, and the desert is in bloom. Spring is a top choice for elopements in Alabama Hills.

Fall (September–October):
Daytime temps are in the 70s–80s, crisp are evenings, and filled with dreamy golden light. Ideal for couples planning to camp or stargaze. This is my favorite time of year in Alabama Hills!

Seasons at a Glance

  • Winter (November–February) is quiet and peaceful, with snow in the Sierras. The daytime temps can still be pleasant in the 50s but the nights are cold. You’ll probably want to stay in town!
  • Summer (July–August) you can expect heat during the day, with temperatures often reaching the high 90s. Early mornings and evenings are more comfortable for exploring and your ceremony/photos.

Sunrise vs Sunset for your Elopement

Alabama Hills is one of those places where both sunrise and sunset deliver totally different but equally beautiful experiences. If you’re unsure which to choose—you don’t have to. (More on that below!)

Sunrise Elopement

Early mornings in Alabama Hills are quiet, and incredibly serene. The first light of day casts soft pinks and warm golds across the landscape, with the Sierra Nevada peaks glowing in the distance. If you’re hoping for a more private and uninterrupted moment to read your vows, sunrise is your best bet.

Sunset Elopement

As the sun lowers, the warm tones deepen and long shadows stretch across the landscape. Sunset light is soft and golden—perfect for portraits or a sunset ceremony. After the sun dips below the horizon, blue hour begins, this shift brings about an hour of cooler tones and even lighting that’s stunning for photos.

Split-Day Coverage

Still torn between the two? You don’t have to choose. I offer a split-day photography package that lets you take advantage of both golden hour windows. This option allows you to start your day with a sunrise ceremony, take a break to rest or explore, and then meet back up for sunset portraits that feel relaxed and unrushed.
